Vietnamese protest China on Loss of Paracel Is. Anniversary

20 January 2008

In solidarity with Vietnamese in Vietnam and around the world, Vietnamese people in Southern California held a protest against Chinese aggression and expansionism in the South China Sea on 19 January 2008 in the Little Saigon Business District in Westminster. On this day in 1974, the Chinese navy clashed with the South Vietnamese navy to illegally take Paracel Islands and has occupied it ever since despite all historical and legal evidence indicate that this archipelago rightfully belongs to Vietnam. Despite the fact that Vietnamese in the U.S. have differences with the Communist government of Vietnam in terms of politics, explaining why there is a different flag being used in the protest, the assertion that the Paracel and Spratly Islands are integral parts of the Vietnamese territories is a point of view that Vietnamese all over the world are absolutely convinced of no matter what political points of view are held. In the days to come, as China continues to carry out its aggressive activities with the ambition to control virtually all of the South China Sea by claiming the various islands in the region as its own, there is no doubt that the Vietnamese around the world will continue to galvanize themselves in order to present a formidable force to resist China’s hegemonic ambitions in Southeast Asia.
